Biographical Information

I work in the construction industry and am researching my family tree in my spare time.

I am trying to trace my line back from present day England through Scotland 1860-1960 and back to Ireland 1820’s.

I am also researching my wife’s CHITTOCK  tree in  Norfolk, Bristol & N. Yorkshire along with my brother in law Peter Chittock  and the name McKnight on behalf of my Great Uncle Thomas McKnight in Australia.

Other prominent names to be found in this site include.

 Chittock x3, Fleming x9, Fowler x10, Kinnaird  x6, Kinsey x7, Mathison x5, McEwan x33, McKnight x8, McOuat x5, Moyes x12, Petrie x3 & Steel x6. Total number of people in Gedcom above is 158.

History

So far my McEwan line has been traced back to Francis McEwan who was born in Ireland c.1820. I know very little about him only that he married Eliza Mawaugh and they had at least two sons and two daughters James b. 1836, Henry b.1842 Jane & Elena b.1847.

Henry moved to Glasgow Scotland where he married Elizabeth Stewart in 1865.

Along with Elizabeth he worked as a weaver mostly in the carpet trade and went on to have at least 11 children.

 Francis 1864,             Henry1865,           James 1867,

Allen 1868,                 William 1870,         David 1871-72,

 Henry 1873,               Elizabeth 1876,       David 1877,

George Wilson 1879  (My G. Grandfather.)      Robert Wilson 1883

As far as I know most of the children followed them in to the weaving trade except George who became an Iron Bridge Builder (Steel Erector) and worked throughout the world on some of the largest construction projects of the time. The most famous jobs being the Sydney Harbor Bridge and the Forth Rail Bridge. Little did he know at the time but he was starting a trend followed by his next 3 generations. This trend is about to be broken by my son who wants to be a mechanic.
