George McEwan

1908-1957

Sent to America in his early 20s Ticket (one way?) paid for by the Petrie side of family, as they did not want him to marry Jamima steel McKnight. On his return from America he got Jamima pregnant and married her in that order.

Went on to give birth to George Wilson Jnr (my Father Named after grandfather.) George had to retire from steel erecting in his early 40,s due to a bad fall which left his arm badly disabled and a mild heart attack. After retirement he worked part time alongside his wife’s uncle John Moyes who was the bakery manager for the CO OP  store's in Glasgow. He also spent a lot of his time looking after his grandson (me)

Jamima Steel McEwan nee McKnight

1907-1987.

On leaving school Jamima worked as a seamstress and shirt maker up until her marriage to George McEwan. After her marriage she stayed mainly at home (327 Dalmarnock Rd, Bridgeton Glasgow). She earned pin money from her ability to see a dress in a shop window and go home and make an exact copy. This skill came in very useful during WW2 when fashionable clothes were in short supply and she made dance dresses and suits for a lot of the local teenagers. In later life she made most of the clothes for her family including her future daughter in laws wedding and going away dresses.  She was still doing alterations for her neighbours on the same Singer foot treadle sewing machine right up until her death in 1987.
